The Science and Engineering of Materials by Donald R. Askeland, Third Edition, continues the general theme of the earlier editions in providing an understanding of the relationship between structure, processing, and properties of materials. This text is intended for use by students of engineering rather than materials, at first degree level who have completed prerequisites in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. The author assumes these stu­ dents will have had little or no exposure to engineering sciences such as statics, dynamics, and mechanics. The material presented here admittedly cannot and should not be covered in a one-semester course. By selecting the appropriate topics, however, the instructor can emphasise metals, provide a general overview of materials, concentrate on mechani­ cal behaviour, or focus on physical properties. Additionally, the text provides the student with a useful reference for accompanying courses in manufacturing, design, or materials selection. In an introductory, survey text such as this, complex and comprehensive design problems cannot be realistically introduced because materials design and selection rely on many factors that come later in the student’s curriculum. To introduce the student to elements of design, however, more than 100 examples dealing with materials selection and design considerations are included in this edition.

Who Wrote It?

Prof. A.K. Raja earned his Electrical Engineering bachelor’s degree from the University of Roorkee in 1967. In 1970, he got his master’s degree in Power System Engineering from the same school. He got the University Gold Medal for doing well in school. He is known all over the world as an Electrical Engineer. Prof. Raja worked in different roles at the University of Roorkee, Roorkee (now I.I.T., Roorkee) for 24 years. He retired as a Professor in Electrical Engineering on his terms. He is currently the Director and Head of the Electrical Engineering Department at Lucknow’s Saroj Institute of Technology and Management. Conventional and non-conventional power plants are two things that interest him right now. He has been to many national and international conferences and presented several study papers. He wrote “Introduction to Non-conventional Energy Resources,” which is the title of a book he wrote. Prof. Raja was given the “Rashtriya Shiksha Ratan Award-2003” by the All India Business Development Association, the “Bharat Jyoti Award-2003” by the India International Friendship Society, and the “Samajshri Award-2000” by the Indian Council of Management. He is the lead examiner for ISO-9000, M.I.E. (India), M.I.A.Q.R., and he used to be the principal member of I.S.I.’s ETD-C35 Committee. During his career, he was also the original director of B.B.D.N.I.T.M. (L.K.O.), N.I.E.C. (L.K.O.), and S.I.T.M. (Barabanki). He was also the former director of D.I.T. (Dehradun) and I.E.C. College of Engineering and Technology, Gr. Noida. Amit Prakash Srivastava is the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Saroj Institute of Technology and Management in Lucknow, where he also works as a Senior Lecturer. He got his B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from C.S.J.M. University’s I.E.T., Kanpur. He earned his M.Tech. from H.B.T.I., Kanpur, with high marks. He has written more than one study paper. Manish Dwivedi is the Head of the Department (Mechanical) at the Seth Vishambhar Nath Institute of Engineering and Technology in Barabanki. He got his Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Mechanical Engineering from Marathwada University in Aurangabad and his Master of Technology (M Tech) from KNIT Sultanpur. He works hard at both teaching and doing the study. He has been to many conferences and given talks on some study papers. He has written several books with other people, including Introduction to Non-conventional Energy, Power Plant Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Problem and Solution in Mechanical Engineering, and Thermal and Hydraulic Machines.

Strength of Materials provides a comprehensive overview of the latest theory of strength of materials. The unified theory presented in this book is developed around three concepts: Hooke’s Law, Equilibrium Equations, and Compatibility conditions. The first two of these methods have been fully understood, but clearly are indirect methods with limitations. Through research, the authors have come to understand compatibility conditions, which, until now, had remained in an immature state of development. This method, the Integrated Force Method (IFM) couples equilibrium and compatibility conditions to determine forces directly.The combination of these methods allows engineering students from a variety of disciplines to comprehend and compare the attributes of each. The concept that IFM strength of materials theory is problem independent, and can be easily generalized for solving difficult problems in linear, nonlinear, and dynamic regimes is focused upon. Discussion of the theory is limited to simple linear analysis problems suitable for an undergraduate course in strength of materials.
